Renewable energy.Union nondestructive testing and weld inspection, UT Quality USA.

A renewable energy build is a welding job before it is anything else — tower sections and flanges, foundation and anchor assemblies, racking and structural steel, the facility piping inside the fence and the interconnect that leaves it. UT Quality USA inspects that welding with union crews, one written practice and the same reporting used on pipeline and plant work.

What we inspect.

The scope UT Quality USA crews are asked for on this work.

Tower sections, flanges & weldments

Longitudinal and circumferential seams, flange and can welds and fabricated weldments, inspected by ultrasonics, magnetic particle, penetrant and visual testing against the structural code the specification names.

Foundations, anchors & racking

Anchor assemblies, embedded steel, base connections, tracker and racking steel and their supports, inspected by MT, PT, UT and VT to AWS D1.1 acceptance criteria.

Facility & interconnect piping

Process, utility and fuel-gas piping inside the fence to the ASME B31 code named, and gas piping tying into a pipeline system to API 1104 and ASME B31.8, by radiography or encoded ultrasonics.

Tanks, vessels & shop work

Welded storage tanks, pressure vessels and their nozzle welds, and the spools, skids and structures fabricated for the site before they ship, with positive material identification where alloy verification is specified.

Methods, codes and crews.

Methods

Automated ultrasonic testing, phased array and TOFD, semi-automated ultrasonics, radiography by film, computed, digital and real-time methods, and the four conventional methods — magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, ultrasonic and visual testing — plus positive material identification. UT Quality’s automated ultrasonic system is proprietary, designed and built in-house.

Codes and standards

Inspected and reported to the code your specification names: AWS D1.1 or the structural code the project specification names for tower, foundation and racking steel, ASME B31.3 for facility process piping, API 1104 and ASME B31.8 where gas piping ties into a pipeline system, ASME Section VIII for pressure equipment, API 650 for welded storage tanks, ASME Section V for examination and Section IX for procedure and welder qualification.

How the work is staffed

Renewable builds run to an in-service date, and much of the steel is set by crane in a short window, so inspection has to keep pace with erection rather than follow it. Crews mobilize from the Katy, Texas base, carry radiographic, ultrasonic and conventional capability together, and shop inspection can catch a rejectable weld before a section ever leaves the fabricator.

Questions.

What renewable energy work does UT Quality USA inspect?

Onshore renewable energy construction — wind, solar, battery storage and renewable fuel facilities — where the scope is welded steel and welded piping: towers and weldments, foundations and anchors, racking and structural steel, facility and interconnect piping, tanks and vessels.

Do you inspect blades, nacelles or drivetrains?

No. UT Quality USA performs nondestructive examination of welds and fabricated steel. Blade and composite inspection, eddy current, acoustic emission, rope access, drone survey and gearbox, drivetrain or nacelle mechanical services are outside this scope, and we do not certify a turbine.

Can sections be inspected in the fabrication shop?

Yes. The same methods and written practice are run in the shop, so spools, sections, skids and structures can be inspected before they ship to site.

Which codes apply to this work?

Structural and tower welds are normally examined to AWS D1.1 or the structural code the specification names, facility piping to ASME B31.3, gas interconnects to API 1104 and ASME B31.8, vessels to ASME Section VIII and welded tanks to API 650. Examination requirements come from ASME Section V; the acceptance criteria are whatever the specification names.

Technicians are certified Level I, II and III to our written practice under ASNT SNT-TC-1A / ANSI/ASNT CP-189, with Level III oversight of procedures and interpretation. UT Quality USA is a union operation.
