UT Quality/UT Quality USA industriesIndustries/Transmission pipelines
Cross-country pipeline construction is the work UT Quality was built around. Automated ultrasonic testing on the firing line, radiography where the specification calls for it, and the conventional methods behind both — run by union crews, to API 1104 and the ASME B31 code governing the system.
The scope UT Quality USA crews are asked for on this work.
Automated ultrasonic testing on the firing line with encoded, zonal coverage and every A-scan retained, or radiography where the specification calls for it.
Welds outside the firing-line rhythm — tie-ins, bore and crossing welds, repairs and golden welds — inspected by the method the specification names for that weld.
Heavier-wall and fitting welds where a single radiographic exposure becomes slow, inspected by encoded ultrasonics or by a source and technique matched to the thickness.
Wall-thickness survey, corrosion mapping and weld inspection on exposed in-service pipe, supplied to the integrity engineer who makes the fitness-for-service call.
Automated ultrasonic testing, phased array and TOFD, semi-automated ultrasonics, radiography by film, computed, digital and real-time methods, and the four conventional methods — magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, ultrasonic and visual testing — plus positive material identification. UT Quality’s automated ultrasonic system is proprietary, designed and built in-house.
Inspected and reported to the code your specification names: API 1104 for girth welds, including Annex A alternative acceptance criteria where an engineering critical assessment is in place; ASME B31.4 for liquid and B31.8 for gas systems; and the federal pipeline safety regulations at 49 CFR Part 192 and Part 195 that govern the operator’s program.
On a spread, inspection either keeps pace with the welding or it becomes the constraint. Automated ultrasonics returns a result at the weld with the data retained, which is what makes API 1104 Annex A alternative acceptance criteria usable in the first place. Work in Canada is run by UT Quality Canada to CSA Z662.
Yes. Automated ultrasonic testing is the core of the pipeline service: encoded, zonal coverage with every A-scan retained for later review.
Annex A alternative acceptance criteria depend on flaw height and length measured to a known accuracy, which is what encoded ultrasonic data provides. The engineering critical assessment behind it belongs to the operator and their engineer.
Yes. Film radiography runs alongside digital radiography, computed radiography and real-time radiography, from the same crews.
Yes — ultrasonic wall-thickness survey, corrosion mapping and weld inspection on exposed pipe, reported to the integrity engineer.
Technicians are certified Level I, II and III to our written practice under ASNT SNT-TC-1A / ANSI/ASNT CP-189, with Level III oversight of procedures and interpretation. UT Quality USA is a union operation.
